Chapter 37

BEFORE

Theo passes her a whiskey, and she takes it.

‘I’m handing you over to my brother,’ he says. ‘He’s nicer than me, so don’t take advantage.

Sterling smiles, wishing she could punch him. He’s doing that creepy thing again where he acts as though they’re friends, colleagues, comrades.

‘I’ll try not to,’ she says. ‘Is he part of all this?’ She waves her arms, encompassing him, the bar, the brothels.

‘He’s the legitimate side of the business. To a point,’ Theo says, and then wags a finger at her. ‘Why am I spilling my secrets to you?’

She shrugs. She knows she’s leaving the brothel, and she knows they want to train her up to kill people.

She sips her drink.

‘How many people does a business like yours need to kill anyway?’

‘You’d be surprised,’ he says, and steeples his fingers under his chin. ‘Do you know the legitimate business came first? My mother always said I’d either earn a fortune or I’d end up in prison.’

Sterling drinks more of her whiskey so she doesn’t have to respond.

‘But the earning potential of a legitimate business has limits. The other stuff, doesn’t.’

Oh, she really would love to punch him. The other stuff is women, young girls, underage girls being used and abused. Drugs, ruining lives and families and killing people. He thinks he’s so suave and smart, but he really is just a criminal, just a thug.

Just a piece of shit.

‘Here he is,’ Theo beams, standing up and hugging the man who’s joined them. ‘Jamie. This is Sterling, our newest recruit. Sterling, this is Jamie. My baby brother.’

Jamie is taller than Theo, and maybe a decade younger. He’s better looking, too. His expression and his eyes are softer than Theo’s. Theo isn’t an ugly man; he’s handsome and well dressed, but Jamie is even better looking.

Sterling hates them both.

This whole meeting is just surreal. She has no choice but to be here, but they act like she does. She hates them.

Theo’s phone rings, and he holds a finger up before answering it and then moving over to the bar.

Jamie takes his brother’s seat and smiles at her.

She smiles back. As much as she wishes she could tell him to go fuck himself, she can’t. He might be the nice brother, but he’d still beat the shit out of her if she did that.

‘Theo’s impressed with you,’ he says, like it’s an accolade, something to be proud of.

She’s silent. She can’t tell him what she wants to tell him, but she doesn’t have to simper and suck up to him either.

‘You’re annoyed?’ he asks, reading her better than his brother did.

She shrugs and sighs. ‘No. I’ll be glad to leave the brothel,’ she says and his face falls.

‘Right. I’m sorry, I didn’t know.’

Where did he think Theo found his next hit-woman then? The bar here, the kitchen. Maybe she’s a good dishwasher.

She keeps her eyes on her drink. She hates having to admit that she worked in the brothel. She always says worked. They didn’t work; they were forced to work.
